Day of the Dead 2023 Paintings

Both of these vibrant paintings were created to submit to the MJC Day of the Dead Art Contest in October of 2023.

Both were accepted, and La Reina de La Estaciones had won in first place. 

These paintings are a colorful exploration on the fashion and symbols inherent in the Day of the Dead culture.  Departing from the traditional front facing view of the skull face painting,  they are depicted at an angle,  emphasizing the connection of human skin beneath. This approach serves as a reminder that the holiday is a time to commemorate loved ones who have passed and celebrate life.   

 La Reina de La Estaciones , 2023, Oil Paint on Wood Panel 14.8125 in x 14.75 in, was painted to capture the essence of changing seasons, using vibrant hues and details within the flora to evoke the spirit of renewal and transformation. 

CancÍon Oscura, 2023, Oil Paint on Wood Panel, 16in x 20 in,  greatly contrasts in comparison, delving into themes of darkness and light, juxtaposing shadowy elements with bursts of color to symbolize the complexities of life and death.
